The Destiny Project

You are destined to be a big shot reporter at the Daily Planet.

We all know that Clark Kent is destined to be a hero, and Lex Luthor a villain, but just how often is this 'destiny' thrown about anyways? And what specifically does this destiny mean? A look at the word usage, whom has a destiny, and what exactly the foretold future is according to the dialog from the Pilot until Doomsday.

3.21, Forsaken

Chloe goes with Lana to have one last look around the Talon before Lana hands over the keys to the new owner.  Neither are thrilled about it being turned into a burrito bar; they meet Emily who is posing as the new owners daughter.  Lana thinks she recognizes her but it doesn't go very far; she agrees to show "Emma" the ropes of the Talon.

Lionel visits the Torch later that night, giving Chloe a picture of Emily and demanding her help; Chloe is dead pan and sarcastic towards him but recognizes Emily and shows it to Clark the next day.  Clark helps her piece together that it is Emily, that Lionel must of grabbed her last year, and Clark mentions that they'd got to keep Emily away from Lex due to Lex working with the FBI.  Chloe is taken aback and points out about Lex's grandparents' murder; Clark refutes that citing that "[they] never had hard evidence before about what Lionel was doing."  But that if they found Emily, they would have evidence that Lionel was illegally cloning people.

Chloe goes to talk to Lex; she tells him what Lionel erased - about MorganEdge, the murder, memory wipe, the confession, her entanglement with his father - and about what she had, the voicemail confession.  She points out that he has enough clout to resurrect that confession and use it.  Lex thanks her for coming forward and Chloe admits that she knows Luthor politics can be deadly but she knows he'll take care of her.

3.01, Exile

Chloe meets up with Lana at the Talon, claiming that Lana's been avoiding her and that her editor has her stuck on dry cleaning detail.  She offers to go with Lana to the funeral and asks if she's heard anything about Clark eventually, after admitting she pulled "the emotional rip-cord" herself.  Lana said no, but she wanted to go looking for him; Chloe reminds her that Clark ran away from "his friends, his family, and the girl he claimed to love."  She adds that they've said their piece about Lana's relationship with Clark but that hanging around will only cause more emotional turmoil; that she "wrote the book."

Why, Chloe? So you can put me in your column and write a big story about me?

The next day, she meets Lionel down in the Kawatchi caves; he points out to her an octagonal keyhole that is now missing and explains it disappeared the same day Clark went missing.  Chloe explains that she's not seen nor talked to Clark and had already given him everything she had on Clark, noting that it was hard to glean more when the subject was missing.  Lionel remarks that her interest was waning, and she retorts that "threatening me isn't going to magically make Clark reappear."  Lionel warns her not to run away from her mistakes like Clark did.

Chloe notices Lana getting ready for the wedding; she notes that Lana and Clark as going as a couple, Lana lies and says they are going as friends.   Lana then says Clark wanted to talk with Chloe, but Chloe said he wasn't around earlier so it couldn't of been as urgent as Lana thought.

Smallville, Episode 2.23: Chloe and ClarkSmallville, Episode 2.23: Chloe and ClarkChloe drives out to the farm to see what Clark wanted to talk to her about; Clark physically pushes her away (As he was about to blow up his space ship) but Chloe gets upset.  She tells him that she knows, that she saw them when she came over to warn him about something that "doesn't matter."  Chloe goes on a tirade about how fate is "inevitable but always surprising."  Clark claims he was going to tell her, but she brushes him off saying that she was okay with the relationship as she saw it coming but she couldn't stand that they lied right after their agreement to be honest with each other.  She tells him to "have a nice life."
