Ezra Small is a fictional character that the producers of "Smallville" use to put out spoilery information to the fans through coded messages, puzzles and other brain teasers in Smallville Magazine or through an online site.  During Season 4, Ezra Small put out this message:

cat horse monkey

There were two interpretations made by people at Kryptonsite.com.   The first theory was that the animals parallel the "Super animals": Streaky the Super Cat, Comet the Super Horse and Beppo the mischievous Super Monkey.  The second was that the animals are represented on the Chinese Zodiac if "Cat" is interpreted as "Tiger."    This interpretation is interesting because there is a dog on the Chinese Zodiac which corresponds to the other remaining "Super animal." - Krypto, the Super Dog.  Further,  the personality profiles for people born under these Chinese Zodiac signs strongly match Clark, Lana, Lex and Chloe.

Lana Lang:  The Horse

Lana, the Horse, in "Sacred"

People born in the Year of the Horse are popular. (Remember Lana’s drawer full of tiaras in the Pilot?) They are cheerful, skillful with money (Lana ran the Talon in high school), and perceptive, although they sometimes talk too much. The are wise, talented (art, kung-fu, astronomy, what skills can‘t Lana master quickly?) good with their hands, and sometimes have a weakness for members of the opposite sex (see Whitney, Adam, Clark, Jason, Lex). They are impatient and hot-blooded about everything except their daily work. They like entertainment and large crowds. They are very independent and rarely listen to advice.

Active, Alert, Outgoing, Adventurous, Eloquent, Free Spirited, Independent, and Quick tempered.
The free spirited Horse is the Chinese Zodiac’s wanderer. Horses need their independence and freedom (e.g. Lana‘s sudden moves to Paris in Covenant and to Met U in Thirst.). They are packed with energy and constantly moving from one activity to another (cheerleading, the Talon, art, kung-fu, witchcraft, astronomy) . Horses are good with money and, of course, have a passion for travel (Lana even time travels via Relic, Crisis, and Spell.)

Paradoxically, Horses desire love, which can lead them to feel ensnared. The rawness of their sex appeal is like a magnet and makes it easy for Horses to find love. Horses are skilled at the art of seduction. However, their relationships are unpredictable because their behavior is so erratic and they may flee without notice (Lana left Jason in Paris in Gone and Clark to go to Met U in Thirst.)  Blessed with a keen wit and powerful presence, Horses love to show off to a crowd. (Lana loved to do horse shows and cheerleading.) Despite the strength of their being, Horses feel inferior to those around them.  Horses are not a patient lot. They can be quite impulsive and more than a little insensitive to the feelings of others (fill in any scene in which someone is obviously troubled and Lana ends up changing the topic to her  problems). These self-reliant beings follow their whims through life, which explains why their paths are often littered with unfinished relationships, jobs and ventures. Conversely, Horses motivate others easily and often do reach their goals

The people born in the Chinese sign Horse are very energetic and hard working by nature. They are very good fast workers and are very good at motivating others. Essentially they are tolerant and sweet natured but at times they can be short tempered and a bit selfish. They possess a good sense of humor. They have a strong sex appeal and there is an aura of pride about them. This makes it easy for them to attract the opposite sex. They love romance and intimacy (No more secrets and lies!). Normally the horse is the center of attraction in a party. They have a very good money sense. They are compulsive travelers and love independence.

They get along well with the Dog, Tiger, Dragon, Horse and Goat signs. They are not compatible with Rats, Snakes and Monkeys.

Lex Luthor, The Monkey

Two headed Lex from "Onyx"Two monkeys hovering over Clana in "Splinter"People born in the Year of the Monkey are the erratic geniuses of the cycle. Clever, skillful, and flexible, they are remarkably inventive and original and can solve the most difficult problems with ease (see Lex in the lab in Onyx, Cyborg or Aqua for examples). There are few fields in which Monkey people wouldn't be successful. They want to do things now, and if they cannot get started immediately, they become discouraged and sometimes leave their projects. Although good at making decisions, they tend to look down on others. (e.g. "muffin-peddling, college dropout" inMonkey goes Ape headline in "Thirst" Solitude) Having common sense, Monkey people have a deep desire for knowledge (e.g. Lex’s quest for the stones in Season 4) and have excellent memories. Monkey people are strong willed but their anger cools quickly. They are most compatible with the Dragon and Rat.

Resourceful, Charming, Persuasive, Amusing, Sociable, Cunning.
Monkeys have an insatiable appetite for fun and activity. Having a good time comes very easily for them in any crowd. (e.g. Lex with all his one night stands in Bound) They are optimistic, witty and blessed with a razor sharp mind. While Monkeys love to be the center of attention, they are good listeners as well. Their bottomless curiosity ensures they will be knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics (e.g. Lex‘s quotes about history, philosophy, biology, foreign languages and foreign cultures.) Their intelligence allows them to address complex tasks and situations with ease.

Monkeys are show-offs who love nothing more than to bedazzle those around them with their antics.  Most Monkeys do not have a highly developed sense of morality. Indeed, if its fun, they’ll do it. Their primary goal is the pursuit of their own pleasure. Monkeys make pleasurable, exhilarating lovers, but beware of the possibility they will stray. Monkeys will try anything once, and if it is the slightest bit entertaining are sure to try it again.  The Monkey’s self-serving attitude may be trouble for many other Signs of the Zodiac. They are very hedonistic and lacking in self-control. If they cannot find a party they will start their own.

The people born in the Chinese sign monkey are highly restless and energetic by nature. They are intelligent, creative, talented and pretty clever. They have a fun loving, cheerful and generous nature and excellent wit and humor, which endears them to most people and hence they are very popular and have a lot of friends. They enjoy company and go all out to enjoy themselves.    They are highly inquisitive by nature and don't mind poking their nose into others business. This gets them into trouble sometimes. They tend to overindulge when it comes to enjoyment, food and drink. Though they are highly individualistic people who would like to grab and cash in an opportunity quickly, they combine well in a group and are disciplined. They rarely admit a mistake, even if they realize it.  They make exiting and romantic lovers but tend to flirt. But they make sincere and responsible parents.  Don't try any monkey business with them or you'll get a stinging slap!  They get along best with Rat, Dragon, Monkey and dog signs and don't get along with Tigers, Rooster and Snake. They are not very compatible with the tiger, rabbit, snake and rooster signs.

Chloe Sullivan, The Dog

Clark's best friends together in "Solitude"The people born under the Chinese sign Dog sign are very faithful, loyal and honest. (Clark to Lois in Blank - "Chloe is very protective of me.") Being very observant, they don't miss much. They make excellent employees as they are very hardworking and honest with an excellent sense of duty and work ethos (Chloe, the workaholic). In business you can always trust a dog businessman not to cheat you.  Unfortunately they don't trust others normally and have a very strong sense of right and wrong (e.g. Chloe‘s suspicious nature towards potential criminals.) Hence they are not very popular (e.g. the football jocks throwing a football at her in Hothead, the Torch being called a "geek rag" in Devoted).

They are somewhat loners by nature and not very good at socializing. However, once they find someone trustworthy, they make loyal friends and passionate lovers. In love they are somewhat possessive by nature, though they don't mind flirting themselves. The Dog sign people are very fit, active and energetic by nature.  Though very disciplined, they easily get disturbed and irritated. They are definitely not the calm and quite types.  They are ever ready to fight for a cause. If you are an underdog in trouble, just go to a dog. He will fight for you - even if he doesn't know you!  They get along very well with the Horse and Tiger signs and not very compatible with the Goat and Dragon signs.

Honest, Dependable, Diligent, Perceptive, Selfless, Caring, Moody, Fun-loving, Adventurous.
Dogs are loyal, truthful and live by their own uncompromising code of ethics. While very trustworthy, they do find it difficult to trust others. Dogs are faithful friends and exceptional listeners. They are the caped warriors of the Chinese Zodiac in that they will fight injustice and side with the underdog anytime, anyplace.  Dogs can be very rigid in their thinking and behavior. They also tend to be moody and need time alone to sulk and revitalize. Dogs are slow to trust, but with time and evidence that someone is trustworthy they will warm up to them.   Dogs need physical activity to be happy. They will champion any cause they deem worthy.  In the pursuit of love, Dogs may be their own worst enemy. They can become so anxious from engaging in the mating ritual that they create too much stress in their potential partners for their dance of love to be successful.

Clark Kent, The CatA cat hovering over Lexana in "Lexmas"

The people born under the Chinese sign Tiger are known for their leadership qualities and their courage. The royal cats have an aura of confident and authority about them and are very charismatic by nature. They like to in charge and don't like being pushed around. (to Andrea in Vengeance - "I’m not a sidekick") They are noble and generous by nature. They make excellent friends and are a terror to their enemies. Tigers can work really hard when they want and can pursue the target with relentless patient, concentration and single mindedness.

They like working alone and prefer to finish the job fast. When they don't want to work they really lazy around and its better not to force them to work. but work best when alone. At times they can be quite moody and sensitive. Tiger sign people are very romantic and passionate by nature. They easily attract the opposite sex and make good lovers. (e.g. Kyla, the women Kal met at bars in Metropolis, the slutty Met. U. sorority girls, Alicia, Lana, and Chloe.) They get along well with the Horse (Lana) and Dog (Chloe) signs. They are not compatible with the goat or Ox signs.

Assertive, Adventurous, Independent, Inventive, Generous, Restless and Impulsive.
Charismatic and self-assured, Tigers were born to lead. This gives them an air of authority most find hard to resist. They are charming and fun, yet never lose sight or stop pursuing their goals or relinquish control. The Tigers' courage is without limit and they rarely lose a fight regardless of the arena. The Tiger is the king of seduction. They are dignified and affectionate. The primal nature of their being makes them very attractive to almost all. Tigers are moody and can strike at those around them without warning.

A Tiger's feelings run deep and are extraordinarily intense. They do not handle stress well and can be overly emotional. An angry Tiger is something to fear. Tigers are often excessive in their behavior and a little moderation could go a long way in making them happier. When Tigers remain centered and focus their energy on worthy pursuits they will achieve great things.
