Episode 1.09, Rogue
As much as Clark and Chloe like her "scathing editorials," the school board doesn't approve of the Wall nor of Chloe's articles about the meteorites. Principle Kwan takes the paper away from her, and in a bizarre twist, gives it to Lana. Lana wants Chloe to "ghost write, just for a few weeks" until control of the paper can be transferred back over to the true editor. Clark says it's a good idea.
Chloe wants no part of it and leaves.
She eventually talks to Kwan and regains control of the Torch after promising to only write stories that she's got absolute proof on. The decision was probably influenced by the fact that Lana was having extreme issues with the paper and wrote an article mocking the administration for censorship. Chloe admits that the paper is one of the things that she really gets to do with Clark and she feels that "the paper is kind of like [her] identity."
Episode 1.10, Shimmer
After a fellow classmate is attacked by an invisible assailant, Chloe and Clark are on the case. They stop for coffee while running theories and over here Whitney and Lana fighting; Chloe tells Clark to "pretend that [they] weren't listening."
Their investigation switches over to Luthor Manor when another invisible assailant spray paints 'Leave!' on the walls. Chloe automatically thinks poltergeist; Clark teaser her about this and points out the hired help at Luthor manor. Chloe talks relationships for a while and reminds Clark in his dealings with Lana that "once you cross that line, you can't hide behind the cloak of friendship."
When looking through broken mirror fragments later, Chloe stumbles upon the substance used to turn people invisible. Chloe goes off to note Amy's blood type and match it to the blood on the mirror.
Chloe comes to Clark with the information about Amy's blood; Clark puts the pieces together and figures out that it's Jeff. He runs off to save the day while Chloe slumps against his couch, once again left out at the crucial moment.
Episode 1.11, Hug
Chloe joins Clark and Lana horseback riding; evidently she's interested in the woods where people have had memory loss incidents for the past ten years. Clark points out there have been stories there since the 1800's - Chloe is talking about Rickman employees running out of the woods screaming. Clark says that he's "sure [she] has a theory about" it. When Lana screams, Clark takes off behind Chloe's back; she notices that he's suddenly out of sight.
When Kyle Tippet is wanted by the Smallville police, Chloe, Clark, and Pete run down theories. Clark specifically asks Chloe to "do some digging" and she says she will; Chloe thinks it's an "interesting story." After "spending the morning delving into the exotic world of agriculture equipment" Chloe discovered that Kyle and Rickman were partners up until the early 90's.
Clark and Chloe confront Kyle back in the woods; Chloe tells Kyle that he's not the only one changed by it. Kyle explains his power, and Chloe asks for a demonstration claiming to like "living on the edge" and that while it "sounds good in theory" that he should prove it. Kyle, of course, uses his powers on her.
He tells them both that Chloe has hidden feelings for Clark and tells Chloe to act on her emotions. Chloe then proceeds to kiss Clark. When she comes out of it, an unhinged Clark tells her it was "Fine." (Another interesting note, that blue shirt from Cool? It's back. Yay!Continuity!) Chloe asks why Kyle let someone like Rickman get away with destroying the environment for so long.
Episode 1.12, Leech
Chloe goes walking through Smallville with Pete. Pete says Clark was acting weird; Chloe says that Clark "has always been weird." She complains that Clark needs a "power bar" since he's still not done with his chores.
"Well, Clark,when you start
throwing people
thirty feet, I'll
start writingnice things about
you too."A thief comes up and grabs Chloe's computer bag; he pushes Pete and Chloe to the ground. Eric sees this and speeds over, telling the thief to "give it back." He breaks a night with his bare hands and throws the thief through a window. Chloe askes Pete "Did you just see that?" Eric parts the crowd to give the bag back to Chloe; she grins up at him and says "Thank you! That was amazing." Eric grins at her and says "Anytime."
Chloe writers her first Ledger-printed article about Eric; she calls him Smallville's Superboy*. Clark says tells her that Eric just stopped a purse snatcher; that it's "not that big of a deal." Eric rushes over to her and thanks her for the article; Chloe thanks him for her computer again and flirts with him. Clark is unamused. Chloe says that she came up with Superboy; Eric says he likes it. Clark thinks it's "kinda lame." Pete says Clark is just jealous; Chloe tacks on "You know Clark, when you start throwing people thirty feet, I'll start writing nice things about you too." (And, amusingly enough, again with the blue shirt.)
* Superboy is notable because of two things, the "super" name and the fact that Eric was named by a journalist. Of course, since Lois Lane named Superman the parallel here is obvious.
Episode 1.13, Kinetic
Chloe is interviewing Lex (Clark is recording it), and she promptly asks him about Level Three. Lex tells her to call him by his first name, she tells him to stop dodging the question. Clark tries to get her to be quiet about it; Lex quotes Ben Franklin about how critics are our friends. Chloe points out the source and smiles. Lex has to take a call from Lionel but tells Chloe he looks "forward to continuing [their] verbal judo." Chloe takes the break to start snooping around the manor and ponders if Lex is just trying to avoid her.
When the Bro Brigade hops in, Clark tells Chloe to run. She does so and elbows and kicks one of them that grabs her. However, he still throws her through a window. She screams for Clark to help her. Clark, affected by the kryptonite in their tattoos, can't reach her before she falls.*
Clark stayed up all night with Chloe in the hospital. Lex brings in the best doctors from Metropolis to help Chloe; Clark tells him that he "should of gotten to her." Lex tells Clark it's not his fault and tells him that the police have been tracking the gang for a month. Clark wants to know why Lex didn't report anything missing; Lex says he just wants "to find the people who did [that] to Chloe" and promised Clark that they would be "dealt with accordingly." When Clark asks what that means, Lex tells him to go home and get some rest.
A day or so later, Clark shows up with flowers for Chloe at the hospital - where Chloe notes him as her first vistior. Clark tells her that "everyone was real worried" about her; Chloe says she noticed and particularly likes the flowers from Lex. She says that Clark's, however, are her favorite. When Clark apologizes to her, Chloe snarks that she's also mad that he didn't "put out the Chicago fire of 1812." When Chloe tells him about the octagonal tattoo; Clark says that he'll "do some digging." Chloe replies "Clark Kent, Investigative Reporter -- it has a nice ring to it."
Later, when Pete and Clark are going to meet at the Torch, Chloe hijacks the meeting to her hospital room refusing to rest anymore and pleads with Clark not to cut her out of the investigation. Chloe discovers how the tattoos work and gives Clark the info needed to save Whitney.
Chloe comes out of the hospital complaining; Clark tells her it wasn't a prison. Chloe comments that she's thinking of doing an expose due to the 'conditions'. She then rushes off to the police to find out about the missing ink, claiming that she "smell[s] a cover-up." Clark tells her it's "good to have her back."
*This is the first time we've seen Clark actually "fail" someone and his first time actively digging for the answers to bring the people that hurt Chloe to justice (unlike X-Ray where he was digging because he was curious about his new powers.)
Episode 1.14, Zero
The SHS freshman high school class has to write a six page biography due in a week; Clark gets Lana and Chloe gets the "illustrative Mr. Kent, himself." She says that she's sure she'll be able to unearth a skeleton or two. Clark says it's not a "corruption scandal" and Chloe says that "it's not like [he] has anything to hide." Clark tells her that he'll be around and Chloe asks Pete if he just blew her off.
When Clark comes home from after-school things, Chloe is waiting at the table interviewing his parents who've let out that Clark doesn't like peas. She says that she's been unable to get a hold of him so she figured she'd "start at the beginning" because the Kents "gracefully agreed to be interviewed."
Chloe asks them about how the adoption processes worked; Jonathan and Martha are silent. Clark says that Chloe's gone "Mike Wallace" on him. Chloe turns to Clark an says that now that he's "finally spinning in [her] orbit" that she has some questions for him too. Clark says he has to go work on his paper; Chloe wants to know if he's avoiding her. Clark promises he'll do it tomorrow. After he leaves Chloe asks the Kents, "Don't take this the wrong way, but has your son always been this strange?" The Kents share a look.
Two days later, she tells Pete that she's "desperate" for information. Pete tells her that her priorities are out of order with the hand that showed up at the Talon and her only talking about Clark. She gets out of him a small story about Clark beating up a bully. When they arrive at the Torch, she grins and proclaims "And so the mystery that isn't Clark Kent deepens." Chloe says because he continues to avoid her, she's had to find information in other ways.
Chloe pulls out information about Metropolis United Charities, citing the strangeness that they were only open for 6 months and handled one adoption. Clark says he can believe she did that. She thought he knew and thought he'd be interested; Clark (getting choked up) says he wouldn't be because his biological parents obviously didn't want him and that she's prying into his private life for a class project. "I'm not some mystery for you to solve," he adds before walking out.
When the cows all turn up dead, Chloe shows up to take photos of them despite their recent fight. She doesn't understand why LuthorCorp would dump there. She shows up later to deliver the photos and Clark asks if their conversation is "on the record or not."
She apologizes and Clark adds on "You saw a story and went right for it; that's what journalists do." Chloe drops the story wanting a friend over a subject. She asks him, off the record, if he wonders about his biological parents. Clark says "Every day of my life." Chloe finds Clark's research on Jude - she comments that she's not the only one "doing some digging." Clark admits that it's part of Lex's past that he was asked to stay out of. Chloe drops off the pictures she took the other day; Clark matches up pictures of Jude.
They go to the Torch where Chloe pulls some files and Clark still can't reach Lex. Chloe pulls up information on the pseudo-Jude by hacking into the DMV database; she tells Clark "See, sometimes persistence is a good thing." Clark tells her to call the Metropolis cops as he thinks Lex is in serious danger.
At the end of the episode, Chloe can't delete the file; although she's obviously conflicted about it. She's dressed up for the Talon opening, looking very Metropolitan but is in the Torch offices saving it in the last frame. The song in the background has lyrics that claim "this lonely road of faith."
Episode 1.15, Nicodemus
Chloe is conducting a poll for the Torch wanting to know everyone's deepest desires. Pete says that sex and violence is human nature. Clark says that he wishes there wasn't a "no fly zone" over Lana; Chloe tells him he can "sit in his loft and play with his telescope or move on."
After Jonathan is admitted to the hospital, Chloe drags Lana with her to investigate the automobile crash. Chloe hears someone in the bushes and snaps a picture. She eventually tags back up with Lana and says the cite is a "dead end."
Clark later heads back to the Torch (he was cutting class in it earlier) and tells Chloe about his encounter with Nicodemus!Lana. Clark says that Chloe must have missed something at the accident. Chloe sees Dr. Hamilton in her photos from the crash. Clark and Chloe split up; Chloe goes off to talk with Dr. Hamilton and Clark goes off to warn Lana.
Chloe goes over to Dr. Hamilton's; apparently they've been corresponding over the internet [and this makes sense as she's known about him since at least Craving]. She shows him the picture and starts asking him questions. When Hamilton doesn't know about the accident; she spies the Nicodemus book and a meteorite on his desk. Chloe charms her way out saying that she was sorry of bothered him and claiming she was "partying with her friends."
She brings her snooping information to Pete and Clark; Pete notes that its nice to know that Smallville has always been weird. She spouts of information about the book and Pete adds in that they found a paper by Hamilton. Chloe found ties from Lex to Hamilton; Pete is upset but Clark says they don't know anything yet.
Pete and Chloe go snooping around Dr. Hamilton's lab. Pete calls her an expert on "breaking and entering." Pete breaks open one the flowers and gets infected; he tells she's beautiful but that he knows she's "only got eyes for Clark." She reluctantly gives him her keys.
She gets over to the hospital to talk with Clark; Chloe tells him that Hamilton was lying and that she found the nicodemus. When Chloe goes back the next morning to Hamilton's barn; it's completely empty. Hamilton is upset but Lex is relocating him to Cadmus Labs but Lex is moving him because of Lionel and Chloe.
