Episode 1.16, Stray
Ryan and Clark go over to the Torch to see Chloe to take a picture (to see if they can find Ryan's parents); she makes a quip about another young boy searching for his parents which lead Clark to sum up her character nicely - "the queen of obscure and irrelevant references." Chloe disputes this, sharing her vast knowledge on the subject; Ryan doesn't care for Chloe because she lies to him to spare his feelings at the end of her example.
However, his dislike of Chloe doesn't prevent him for trying to hook her up with Clark. Clark is amazed and kind of oblivious at the revelation (and scoffs it off, not realizing that Ryan can read minds at this point in the episode.) Ryan notes that Chloe's got a "romantic side [he] never knew about."*
Later, Chloe and Clark go clue hunting around the accident scene. Chloe points out that Ryan "adores [him], why would he lie?" She is the first to notice Ryan's backpack at the side of the road. Chloe notes Clark's ability to find Ryan's picture with confusion. Also amusing, when Chloe doesn't know how Ryan knew about her dress her first guess is "maybe he's an alien."
When Chloe comes to him later with more evidence to solve the 'riddle of Ryan' she notes - "I'm still here Clark; I'm not going anywhere." She points out that she's got an inside track from a traffic cop at the sheriff's office Clark asks "You have sources?" Clark puts the pieces together and runs off to save everyone's favorite millionaire playboy.
* This is the first occurrence of a metahuman - someone not enhanced by kryptonite on the series. It's noted that Chloe doesn't realize it at the time.
Episode 1.17, Reaper
Chloe evidently found out that one of the citizens that Clark had helped volunteer for [continuity note from Hourglass] had died and left him a note. Chloe notes the official story (a fire) though it is more than obvious she believes the unofficial one -- spontaneous human combustion. Clark notes her enthusiasm to which she quips - "I'm not happy, I'm intrigued." Pete and Clark both note her enthusiasm as a sign that Chloe's still going to look into it.
Late that day, she finds an article in the Daily Planet about a missing body (which is, of course, ash due to the FotW). Clark notes the similarities and Chloe tells him that "It sure would be nice to check out that house for ourselves." Clark nods in agreement.
"Don't lookat me. He
does that all
the time."Chloe takes pictures of the bed and the ashes - despite the fact that it's a crime scene. Clark notes that the dog is missing and finds the remains - noting that he thinks someone is behind the death of Mrs. Sykes and her dog (and, by proxy, the death of the coroner in Metropolis.)
Later that night, Chloe uses her sources to get the autopsy photographs of Tyler at the coroners office. Chad who "works weekends for the ME" gave her the toxicology report which showed that Tyler had kryptonite in his system. When Lana comes to tell Clark that Tyler is going after Whitney's father and Clark runs out, Chloe notes that Clark "does that all the time."*
* Similar to an Lois and Mayson exchange on Lois and Clark.
Episode 1.18, Drone
The student president race is underway, and Chloe has to choose who to write about for the Torch out of the three choices Paul, Sasha, and Felice. Chloe tells them that she's going to run bios and photos of everyone (so there is no bias) and she's asked about who she's going to endorse in the editorial.
However, that is eclipsed when Paul is stung by hundreds of bees. By the next day or so, she's already been in contact with the Center for Environmental Protection (kind of like the EPA?) Chloe is still pulling for Paul as she discusses politics with Pete -- who has just put Clark in the running. Clark (in blue) doesn't seem to happy about this; Chloe notes - "Pete Ross, the king maker"* Later, Clark is still lamenting to Chloe about being in the election. She notes that some people are born to greatness, "others are dragged into it kicking and screaming." When they see how tightly wound Sasha is, Clark's mindset seems to shift. Chloe tells him that he has a shot at winning, "right after [she's] elected head cheerleader."
The next day, Chloe confronts him at his table calling his slogan presumptuous. Clark likes being called "the Man of Tomorrow." Clark says he's had a change of heart but Chloe takes the conversation with Lana to mean that Lana is the reason why he's running - not truly being interested in school politics. Clark notes (slightly perturbed) that Pete and Lana have faith in him "but [she doesn't]." Chloe tells him she wants to know what his stance was on the "issues"; Clark tells her that he stands for "truth, justice, and...other stuff."** Chloe, after rapidly firing off some questions, tells him that "the Man of Tomorrow needs to get a platform for today."
Later that day, Clark comes into the Torch asking if she wants to help hang posters; Chloe claims she can't because she needs to remain the impartial fourth estate and because she's busy working on finding the cause of Paul's bee attack. She asks him how the platform is coming and then teases him about selling out to the "lure of popularity." Clark jokes he'll cut her funding when he gets elected. Clark goes searching for the latest edition, despite Chloe telling him it's not finished. He waylays her by reminding her that he's been correcting her grammar since her "first laptop" [continuity from X-Ray] before getting a look at her editorial. Chloe endorsed Paul on the basis that Clark didn't make a platform but Clark takes it as a personal attack despite telling her that he "understand[s]."
The day after the fight, Chloe approaches Pete and Clark in the lunch room. Pete tells Clark to say "no comment" but Clark talks to her anyway about her bee story. Chloe went to the hospital where she finds out medical records enough to know that Felice is in a coma. Clark comes up with a theory that Chloe says she'll look into and tells him to be careful.
The next morning, Clark goes to investigate Sasha's barn and runs into Chloe. Chloe notes that Lana told her about the Talon and that Clark didn't but she's not angry. Clark apologizes, saying that he doesn't hold the endorsement against her; he notes that Chloe is the "only thing constant" in his life and that he's happy for that. Chloe puts together the "meteorite math" for Clark and tells her that Sasha is going to loose control of the bees.
At the election party, Chloe is taking pictures for Paul who couldn't be there. Clark admits that he got caught up in the popularity but Chloe says she's there to support her friend as well as her candidate. She also says that she's really proud of him - "You are exhibiting dignity in the face of defeat - it's the quality that all great leaders possess."
* This note is funny given that Pete is the power behind the throne in the Luthor/Ross ticket of the future and that it is Pete who cinches the win for Lex in that Presidential election.
** Another blatantly obvious comic/movie shout out that is very much Lois-like; in the movie when Lois interviews Superman, he tells her that he stands for "truth, justice, and the American way" -- obviously at this point, Clark hasn't grasped that last part.
Episode 1.19, Crush
There is a job fair at SHS and Chloe finds out that the Daily Planet only accepts four high school internships. When Clark reminds her that Lex is willing to get her a job at the Inquisitor [continuity from Craving and Kinetic] Chloe protests - "No. I'm interning at the Planet, I don't care if it's delivering coffee to the classified department." Pete tells her to try again when she goes to the journalism conference; only Clark forgot to buy the tickets. Chloe is frustrated that Clark's not willing to spend non-school time around her any more and tells him that while "most men are from Mars, [he's] from some distant planet [she's] never even heard of."
Justin Gains, former Torch cartoonist, shows up back at SHS and tells her he probably won't becoming back to the paper. Chloe tells him that she's re-adjusting her priorities as well and agrees to go out for coffee with him fresh off her fight with Clark.
Later that day, Clark finds out that Chloe's going to the journalism conference with Justin after he went to get tickets from Lex's connections; she snarks that Clark's "not that interested in journalism anyway." Chloe takes the part of Justin's hit-and-run license plate and gives it to her source at the DMV despite Clark wanting her to go to the police. Clark notices that Justin is carrying around clippings of his doctor's accident.
A few days later, Chloe gets a drawing from Justin and finds out that he's always liked her. During an impromptu make-out session, his telekinetic powers reveal themselves. Justin is worried that he'll end up on her wall, but she swears he won't and wants to "make everything float again." Clark walks in on them and asks to have a word in private -- while they are out in the hall Justin intercepts the fax from the DMV.
Clark is worried that the relationship is moving to quickly; Chloe says she knows Justin better than she knows Clark. At that Clark claims he was just trying to look out for her. Chloe gets upset noting that if "[she's] in trouble [he'll] rescue [her], but otherwise [he's] emotionally unavailable" and telling him that he as a "savior complex." She tells Clark that she's willing to take a chance unlike him.
The next day, Chloe is distraught about Principal Kwan's death. Chloe tells Clark that she doesn't need his help and that he's wrong about Justin. He notes that she did get a fax from the DMV and hopes she's right about him. When Chloe goes to see Justin herself later (presumably to ask about the fax) she notices his comic book about the deaths he's causes. She goes off to find Clark, but he realizes she knows.

Chloe runs to Clarks barn and tells him on the phone that she knows how the accidents have happened; Justin uses his powers to take away her phone and beat her around. He notes that "[she's] a fighter" before knocking her out with a horse shoe and trying to kill her with a chain saw. Clark fights Justin and knocks him out before rushing to Chloe's side.
Later, they are sitting in the Talon and Chloe laments that once again she could see Wall of Weird material "a mile away, but put it in front of [her] and [she's] oblivious." Clark says she's just trusting and that he wishes he was as brave as her. Then re-invites her to the journalism conference. Chloe tells him it's a date, and he holds her hand. The Cool shirt returns. This shot of Clark holding Chloe's hand over the table at the Talon is shot and blocked the same way Lois and Superman hold hands over the table in the FOS in Superman II.
However, given the fact that they both attended the Fordman funeral, if they went is debatable. The song used here is a cover of "Time After Time."
Episode 1.20, Obscura
Chloe stops by to visit Lana at the hospital telling Clark that she can reschedule her interview at the Planet even though Clark reminds her that she's been waiting for weeks fot it and that Lana's going to be okay. Chloe says she's going to stay "at [her] cousin's dorm" and to call her if anything goes wrong with the Torch. Clark says that everything will be fine; Chloe asks him to "wish [her] luck?" and he replies she doesn't need it. Walking out to her car, she gets kidnapped and Lana, with her new meteor power, sees it.
Clark tends the Torch while he thinks she's in Metropolis - noting she's gone one day and it goes down in flames [note: this line is repeated from Hothead.] Lana tells him about her dream and then later teases him about buying tickets for the Spring Formal for himself and Chloe while she's out of town. When Lana has another vision, Clark calls Gabe Sullivan and the police.
While captured, Chloe cuts through her duct tape bonds and tries to escape noting what she could about the room. Her captor injects her with a green sedative and welcomes her then to a metal coffin which he buries her alive in.
The sheriffs department finds Chloe's car abandoned in the woods and Clark later tells Lana that he and Jonathan went on a search party looking for her. Lana tries to comfort him and listens as Clark tells her how Chloe first met - she transferred down from metropolis in 8th grade, insisted to find the Daily Planet stand in town, decided she was going to see his farm, and then kissed him in his loft. "It was my first kiss," Clark admits. Lana has another flash as she leaves the barn of Chloe in the coffin near the windmill.
"It's you!
It's always
you."Clark rushes to the scene and x-rays until he finds the box. He pulls the lid off of it and helps her out; Chloe tells him "It's you Clark! It's always you!" after coming-to. Clark takes her to the hospital where she has to spend over night for observation. The Daily Planet wanted an interview but she declined, deciding to write it up herself for the Torch. She thanks Lana for saving her and asks Clark to stay with her; when Jonathan notes that Clark was out late, he admits he snuck in after visiting hours to sit with Chloe.
The next night Clark is working at the Torch (he's some how fixed the printer he broke earlier), when she shows up claiming she can't sleep so she might as well help. Evidently, Clark already called Whitney for back up and figured out how Lana was getting the meteor-vision; they leave to go get Lana though Chloe insists on driving. When they get to the Talon, they discover Officer Vertigo knocked out and that Officer Watts is the bad cop.
The next day Chloe visits Clark in his barn; the Daily Planet read her article in the Smallville Ledger and offered her a internship sans interview for the summer. Clark congratulates her and promises to visit her over the summer; then nervously he asks her to the Spring Formal "as [his] date" and Chloe says she'd love to and that it was "worth the wait" for him to ask her. The song (very fitting) is John Mayer's "No Such Thing."
Episode 1.21, Tempest
Clark is preparing for the Formal; trying to decide his tie color, get the flowers, and even thinking to borrow a limo from Lex because he "knows" she wants one even though she says she doesn't. However, Chloe accidentally dashes his good mood when she tells him that the LuthorCorp plant was closed that morning.
Later that day, Clark meets Chloe in the Torch, claiming to have been looking for her; she tells him that she still wants to go to the Spring Formal to "appreciate all the quaint Smallville High customs while [she] can"; it turns out Gabe is talking of moving back to Metropolis permanently. This doesn't thrill Clark or Chloe at all; Chloe makes Clark promise her that "Saturday is going to be great." Clark tells her it will "be a night [she'll] never forget."
A few days later, Chloe agrees to drive to the dance after Clark's truck exploded. He complains that he's lost the "Prince Charming vibe." Chloe reminds him that "Cinderella was never really [her] role model anyway."* They both note Whitney's departure while springboards them into a conversation about Chloe's fears that Clark will abandon her at the dance to "confess [his] undying love for Lana." Clark kisses her in the hallway and tells her that he's going with her because he wants to "not by default."
""Everytime I thinkI've got you figured out
you surprize me."Chloe picks Clark up for the dance where she notices Clark didn't pick the red tie - he claims that "instinct told [him] it was the wrong way to go." When they get to the dance, it has already started raining. They get compliments from their friends; Chloe takes Pete's picture while Clark waves Whitney goodbye.
At the dance, Clark requests one of Chloe's favorite songs for her. She remarks that Clark is a man of mystery - "Every time I think I've got you figured out, you surprise me." Clark notes that he's still there and they have the now infamous almost-kiss. When Clark realizes Lana's in possible danger, he runs off without a second thought leaving Chloe to look for him in the crowd.
*Notable - this is the first of many Cinderella shout-outs; interesting also that in 'Superman for All Seasons' Lois makes a comment about giving up on fairy tales, and in the Silver Age comics, Lois was actually turned into Cinderella. In Superman: The Movie, Lois also makes comments about Cinderella.
