Episode 2.11, Visage
Chloe opens up walking out of history yet again (as mentioned in Red and Lineage) talking about how "thinking you know the truth about someone only to find out that it may be a total lie." She admits that Betsy Ross used to be a role model for taking a major role in shaping this country, but in first grade that feel apart when she learned she was just a "glorified seamstress."
When Whitney shows up, she confronts Lana about Lana's wardrobe crisis; Lana admits her feelings for Whitney came rushing back (similar to what Chloe noted about Clark to Lana in Heat). Chloe claims that Lana might be falling for a "man in uniform" and Lana remarks that Whitney doesn't have "deep dark secrets."
Clark approaches Pete and Chloe later that week with his theory that Whitney is really Tina Greer; Chloe negates it by pointing out that she's running the story of Tina Greer's suicide on page two. Clark asks if anyone checked the dental records, and it turns out Tina went homicidal on a fellow inmate to get out.
Episode 2.12, Insurgence
No Chloe.
Episode 2.13, Suspect
Chloe is working on the Torch on an article on Jonathan Kent's murder accusation, commenting that "sometimes being an objective journalist really sucks." Lana is looking for some information on why Henry Small didn't take the case; Chloe admits she did some research and tells Lana that Henry used to do legal council for LuthorCorp, and was fired from his old firm due to a LuthorCorp complaint. She tells Lana, once again, that she can only get so much from a computer and that one must talk to the source.
Episode 2.14, Rush*
Chloe and Pete go to a rave in the Kawatchi caves; Pete is worried about them and the paintings, Chloe is sure everything is going to be fine. When they get inside, they notice people acting abnormally - Chloe's dorky chemistry partner tried to make out with her and then jumped to his death (he's the first in a long line of Clark and Superman riffs); Pete gets bitten by one of the worms in the cave.
The next day, Chloe finds out from Lana that Lana and Clark are going on a date when she asked Lana to go shopping with her and talk about what happened to her chemistry partner; Chloe tells her to go for it, not to let her "be [Lana's] excuse." Later that day, when she asks Clark if he has plans for the weekend he dodges her question. Clark brings up that Pete skipped school and helping out on the memorial issue; Chloe points out that her chemistry partner had a small puncture wound in the back of his neck as did two Smallville Community College students.
"A certainfriend of
reporter
mine said to
explore all options."Clark and Chloe check out the caves the next morning; Clark reminds her of the advice of his "reporter friend" to "explore all options" before looking in the other chamber. Chloe pokes around a painting with the S-crested worm when she is startled by Fredrick Walden, a linguist brought in by Lex to research the glyphs; when she's startled, she gets bitten and immediately starts climbing up the cave walls - standing next to the cave!woman from Skinwalkers. She sasses back to Walden when he tells her and Clark to leave and tries to take her camera.
Clark goes to the Torch with a theory on the pinhole puncture mark to find her making out with another guy; she reminds him of his date with Lana, then snarks that she's not jealous just "exploring all options." Clark explains his theory about a burrowing parasite, explaining he can't get within fifty feet of Pete and if he could get her to get Pete to her house. Chloe grins and says that she'll "do it for [him]" and claims it's a date (ala Crush).
Chloe and Pete drop in on Clark at the Talon where they mock Lana and Pete slips Clark a red meteorite. The trio heads back to the barn where Clark decides to clue Chloe in, commenting that he was surprised she hadn't figured it out already. Clark has Pete show off the invulnerability, the speed, and the heat vision; she questions "What are you?" and he replies that he's not from around her. Chloe asks if he can fly, and he responds that he's not a cartoon. Chloe tests Clark, asking if "[she fell] would [he] catch [her]" before jumping off the barn railing which is a repeat of Dichotic's save. Lex walks in questioning what is going on; Clark tells Chloe that Lex doesn't know, only people "[he] trusts not to stab [him] in the back."
"I always knewthere was
something special
about you,
Clark Kent."Chloe asks Clark what other superpowers he has as the trio makes their way to jump Shuster's Gorge; Clark invites her to the back seat where they start making out. Chloe asks to go to the Talon, where they continue making out until Clark looses his red kryptonite and realizes everyone is watching them. Chloe accuses Clark of treating her like "[his] own personal search engine" and says she's tired of it, that she wants him. She deflects his claim that she's not herself, adding that she spends too much time reporting life and not enough time living it, pulling him down for a kiss that Lana sees. When Clark tries to claim it's not what she thinks, Chloe says that its; she adds that Clark told her "everything."
Chloe and Pete go to leave, but Clark comes out to stop them when Pete knocks him out with kryptonite. They drive back to the gorge and over, but Clark catches the car with both of them in it and takes them to the hospital. He visits Chloe after her surgery; she remarks that she finally made the Wall of Weird. She tells him that she doesn't remember anything past the cave itself, and he assures her that she didn't miss anything exciting. When Lana shows up, he promises to visit with her later; Lana tells her that she caught Clark making out with another girl but she "didn't recognize her." Later that evening when Lana asks why Clark kissed Chloe back, he doesn't have an answer for her.
*This episode had the second highest ratings in season two, it also happens to be one of the few "Chloe goes bad!" episodes and one of the few advertised Chloe episodes in the series.
Episode 2.15, Prodigal
Chloe comes into the Talon after lunch for an almond latte, and starts looking through Lana's current job applications. She picks out Clark's application snarking that he didn't list her as a reference. Lana claims she's not going to hire him, but Chloe admits that "bossing Clark around is the highlight of [her] day." She adds that Clark always come through, even if it's on his own schedule and that Lana's only balking on hiring Clark because of her own issues with him.
The next day, Clark delivers her favorite Talon goodies to the Torch to thank her for the recommendation that got him hired. He comments that with Lucas Luthor's return, he's worried for the Talon; Chloe remarks that it could earn someone a "byline on the front page of the Daily Planet." Clark claims he doesn't trust Lucas and asks her what she found. Chloe retorts that he's had a hard life but the only unusual thing she found was that his Metropolis United Charities file was created only two weeks ago.
Chloe keeps digging, finding out that the man who tried to kill Lucas died in the middle of a prison cell; she remarks if Clark knows anyone with that much power. He goes off in search of Lionel, leaving and asking Chloe to cover his shift.
Episode 2.16, Fever
Clark drops off raffle items at the Talon in the morning, telling Pete, Lana, and Chloe that is mom is sick. When Chloe starts trying to ask questions as to what she has, he snaps at her; she apologizes and so does he saying he needs to go back to the hospital.
The next day, Lana had told Chloe that Clark had come down with the same disease. Chloe drives up to the farm, apologizing to Jonathan for being a nuisance and asking if she could sit with him*. She sits with him remarking about how he ruined his perfect attendance record. She adds in that she'd never seen him sick before and made her wonder "what if something happened to [him] and [she] never got a chance to tell..." Chloe wrote a letter to read/give to him:
I want to let you in on a secret. I'm not who you think I am. In fact, my disguise is so thin, I'm surprised you haven't seen right through me. I'm the girl of your dreams masquerading as your best friend. Sometimes I want to rip off this facade like I did at the Spring Formal, but I can't because you'll get scared and you'll run away again. So I decided that it's better to live with a lie than expose my true feelings.
My dad told me there are two types of girls. The ones you grow out of and the ones you grow into. I really hope I'm the latter. I may not be the one you love today, but I'll let you go for now, hoping one day you'll fly back to me because I think you're worth the wait.**Clark whispers Lana's name and Chloe leaves in tears.
The next day Lana walks in noticing Chloe's head line about the "killer mold spores" as she's there to pick up the programs. Lana remarks that a situation like that makes people realize who is important in their life, Chloe adds that it also makes people aware who is important to Clark. Lana is confused until she finds and read a crumpled up pieces of pink paper which had Chloe's letter on it.
At the party that night, Clark stops her to tell her he was told that she visited him and that he thought it was sweet of her. Chloe comments, "what are friends for," before wandering off into the crowd. Clark asks Lana if Chloe's okay; Lana replies that him being sick made them both very worried.
* Notable that Chloe's outfit mimics (in fact the entire episode mimics) an episode from Lois and Clark entitled "Home Is Where the Heart Is" right down to the emotional talk to an unconscious and sick Clark.
** A reference to the S1 episode Obscura, also to a quote from Lois and Clark that declared all the work to get to their marriage was worth all the wait. This letter, according to director Greg Beeman, was specifically written for Allison by Al Gough and Miles Millar (the producers who were at the time writing Spider-man II, not Smallville.) as noted in the Smallville: Season Two Companion. Thanks to Veaglarwen for this tip.
Episode 2.17, Rosetta
Chloe, Pete, Lana, and Clark are conversing about a history assignment to do family trees, Pete is the only one not bummed about it claiming that one never knows what mysteries will be found. Chloe points out that the rest of them had their nuclear family "nuked long ago." Lana suggests getting together to plan out the project, when Clark (after hearing an odd whining sound that only he could hear) runs out.
Later, Chloe lets Lana use the Torch to work on the project. Chloe leaves and then comes back to find Lana looking through the pictures from the Spring Formal. Lana tries to deflect the prying charge by telling Chloe to tell Clark about her feelings; Chloe says it's a matter of privacy, following up that she already had told Clark and that he'd called out Lana's name.
"Come on Clark,You've got
this is Smallville.
to at least
consider the
possibility."Chloe picks Clark up for school the next morning, rushing out the car to see the Kent Barn on fire. She takes photos of it, asking what happened; Martha tells her that it's a prank, but Clark knows that Chloe will print the story. Clark goes over to the Talon, figuring that Chloe's writing and exclusive, and talks over Lana's fight with Chloe; he assumes that Chloe dug into Lana's privacy and then that Chloe should cut her some slack after all the digging she's done.
The next day, Clark confronts her about turning his family's farm into "Area 51." Chloe remarks that it could be a Kansas University prank or that maybe "aliens think that crop circles are passé." Clark says he'll forgive her if she forgives Lana; Chloe tells him that he doesn't need to butt-in to her business. She checks her email which has been spammed with email for Clark from a guy named Swann; inside is an image of the burned barn symbol.
The day after that, Chloe's done some research and realized that Swann was Virgil Swann - "you're being stalked by a legend." She does a profile on him, telling Clark that Swann's mock title was the 'Man of Tomorrow'* and that he has spent the rest of his life looking for alien life forms. When Clark tries to tell her it was just a hoax, she tells him to figure out why one of the most brilliant minds doesn't agree Clark, of course, goes and meets Virgil Swann, as played by Christopher Reeve.
Later that day she comes home to find Lana packing; she tells Lana that when it comes to her feelings for Clark she's never been "really rational" and that she over reacted. Chloe shares her family tree where she marked Lana as her sister, commenting that her family wasn't about the people who didn't love her, but that "it's about the people who do love me. No matter what."
* The same as Superman's in the comics and Clark's slogan for his political campaign in Drone. Which of course, is one of the famous Superman titles. And of course, it was a reference to the Superman: The Movie serials given the casting.
