Episode 3.09, Asylum

Chloe catches Clark at the Torch late at night; he's working on trying to prove that Lex doesn't belong in Belle Reve.  Clark's pulled Lex's medical files but Chloe says they don't prove conclusively, she suggests coming back in the morning to help him out.   Chloe is helping Lana with her rehabilitation and suggests he help; Clark replies that had Lana wanted his help, he would of been there.   As she's about to leave, Clark stops her leaving as he reads off Lex's updated therapy.   Dr. Claire Foster recommended Lex for electro-shock therapy in 24 hours.

They confront Dr. Foster the next day in Metropolis to try to convince her to stop this procedure.  Chloe tells her that while she could "talk [her] way out of Lex's dubious drug regime" but that she's already had a lawsuit over electro-shock therapy.   Clark adds that just because Lionel Luthor is paying her off, it doesn't mean she has to go through with it.

The next day, Chloe meets Clark in the Torch; Claire Foster died on the way to cancel the electro-shock therapy.   Pete tells them that they'd better stop interfering before Lionel comes after them as well.  Clark then attempts to save Lex himself, and fails; afterwards, Jonathan tells Clark that he doesn't want "[Clark] and Chloe taking up this charge."

Episode 3.10, Whisper

After going blind in a freak accident involving kryptonite and heat vision, Clark attempts to go back to school; sounds suddenly become amplified, specifically Chloe talking on a cellphone (unknowingly) yards away.*   She's arguing with Lionel Luthor about researching Clark yet again; she reiterates that she's done with their deal.  Lionel warns her from going back to Lex at all and tells her she will give him a new report on Clark.

Chloe visits him later in the day, clueless that he knows the truth.  Clark brings up Lionel anyway, asking her how long she's been dealing with the billionaire.  Chloe admits that it's been since last spring but she didn't tell him anything he didn't already know and he wasn't sharing anything with her.   Clark is livid that she traded him for a column and some new Torch computers regardless; she replies that Lionel caught her at a moment of weakness.   Chloe adds that once Lionel had a hold of her, he didn't want to let go; she thought of all people, Clark would of understood making a stupid decision.

"I'll be
whatever
I want."

Lionel calls Chloe all the way into Metropolis because he suspects that she's been talking to Lex again; this isn't true and she denies it.  Lionel tells her if she just admit she fed something to Lex then he'll not cancel her column.   Chloe says he can, warning him that she'll give the Daily Planet a story about "an eccentric billionaire with an obsessive interest in a Kansas farm boy."   Lionel warns her not to threaten him and Chloe retorts that she'll "be whomever [she] wants."

Chloe runs into Pete and Clark at the Talon where she says she's glad their okay.   Pete coaxes out of her that she's lost her Planet column, additionally that Lex fired her father.   Clark's taken aback by the later, but Chloe simply tells him to go talk to Lex.

* In the comics, Clark has memorized Lois' heartbeat and can hear it out of everyone else in the world (as  recently recanonized in For Tomorrow's arc); out of everyone to hear with his super hearing, Chloe is the first.  This trend continues in the following seasons.

Episode 3.11, Delete

Chloe Sullivan is leaving the Daily Planet when she's stopped by George "Max" Taylor; he tells her that she's pissed off someone because they can't even print her name in the classifieds.   She jokes about being blacklisted before she graduates, before having an idea.  She passes Max a yellow floppy with some stories she wants him to look at; Chloe suggests using a pseudonym if he can't get around the name issue -- Lois Lane.  It's the name of her cousin who "isn't interested in journalism at all."

"Well, what about a
psyedonym?
She's my cousin.
She won't
mind at all.
She's not
interested
in journalism."

"Lois Lane?"

When she gets back to Smallville, she makes a run by the Torch; Pete's there and he informs her that Lionel took  away all the donated computers to the school as well in edition to firingher and her father in the last episode.   She's upset and starts walking out to her car when a red pick-up truck chases her across the parking lot; she dives to the ground moments before it smashes into a van.   She gets up and looks at the driver: a very confused Clark Kent.  They both go to the hospital where Clark's given a breathalyzer and he says he doesn't remember what happened at all; the last thing he remembers is working on his history paper.   Chloe shares a look with him before adding that it looked like he "lost control of the truck" and having him shooed out of the room.

The next morning, she confronts Clark in his barn where she tells him she wants to know the real reason he tried to run her over; Clark's confused until she spells out that she was "covering for [him]."  She says that she's not sure if he'd do it or not, he rebuts that she's "not who [she] used to be."  Chloe points out his Metropolis summer ("kind of like running off to Metropolis and becoming a whole different person" - with Williams in the background) before going about looking for more clues to what really happened.  On his laptop she finds an un-openable letter from 'Brainwave.'

Later that day, Lana gets hit with the same email and attacks Chloe in Smallville High with an axe getting them both suspended.   They regroup with Clark and Adam in the Talon where Chloe jokes "someone is officially trying to kill [her]" and she figures out that Brainwave has struck twice.  Adam helps them piece together that it must be some massively power hypnotic suggestion, and that the reason it wasn't sent to Chloe herself was because our survival instinct would override it. Adam traces the signal back to her HD from the old Torch machine (which is now missing from LuthorCorp).

Chloe goes into the Torch at night the day after; Clark's there doing research and startles her.  He's found the images of the woman who stole Chloe's computer from LuthorCorp.  Chloe recognizes her as Molly Griggs, a former teen genius who had a mental break down and was sent to Summerholt Neurological Institute.   She says that ever since what happened to Ryan, she's been looking into Dr. Garner and Molly had given her enough information to shut Garner down for good.  Clark has her call Max Taylor to warn him; Max doesn't seem to understand the danger.  Max thinks that she's on to something and warns her not to be scared off -- right before his Brainwaved secretary went homicidal.

Clark and Chloe go to visit Lex the day after; Lex comments that she really must of had Garner "over a barrel" with her article if he'd go after her like this.   She says it's a "nasty habit" that she's picked up by continually getting in over her head.  Lex is intrigued by the possibilities that Garner has opened up; Clark decides to talk to Garner telling Chloe that he'll be find and he'll call her if he finds out anything.  Lex tells her to make herself comfortable that he's going to go check on his men who are tracking Molly.

That night, she gets a phone call to go out to the barn where Martha and Jonathan have gone Brainwave on her; Jonathan has her chained to a post and Martha comes after her with a cycle.  Chloe kicks Martha out and Clark shows up from apprehending Molly just in time to show down with his father.   Jonathan however, has kryptonite and starts slugging Clark; Chloe drops the loft's supply of hay on all three which knocks both of the Kents out of it.

Later, Clark and Chloe regroup at the Torch; Lex has given the school it's computers back without any strings attached.   Chloe admits that she feels she kind of deserves what happened as it was a payback for her deal with Lionel.   Clark replies that she can't take all the blame, if he hadn't pushed her around then she never would of caved in the first place.  She says she didn't set out to hurt him, that she was just so flattered and she just caved in when Lionel laid the Daily Planet in front of her.  Clark says she gave him a second choice that summer and he at least owes her that much.   He tells her there are "things that will never add up."   Chloe chastises him that she '[knows] that" and agrees to stop looking.   They agree to see each other tomorrow.*

*  The song in this scene is  Hoobastank's "The Reason" which is about restarting a relationship after discovering what is imporant.

Episode 3.12, Hereafter

Chloe and Pete have gossip about Adam for Clark; Clark's not interested deciding to simply be friends with Lana and changing topics to Jordan Cross a new kid he's been assigned to show around.  He believes that Jordan has premonitions through touch, and Chloe says given Clark's record with Wall material that they'll look into it.  Clark thanks her but she says he doesn't need too -- "it's kind of fun being Woodward to [his] Bernstein again."*

Chloe is walking though SHS when she sees Adam Knight sneaking around; she follows him into a science lab where she sees him injecting himself.   She sneaks the syringe out and goes to tell Clark, but remembers what he said about Adam being off topic.  Clark says he's confirmed Jordan's powers with a Ledger article from when Jordan was six; Chloe one ups him by already going to the courthouse and finding out that Jordan was born the day of the meteor shower and a meteor killed his mother. They hear a commotion outside and Clark rushes to check up on Jordan.

Chloe goes to the Talon to see Lana; she says she's having  "one of those "it sucks to be a reporter" days."   Lana asks what's going on and Chloe tells her what she found.

The next night, Chloe sneaks into Adam's loft apartment where she finds a small clear vial.   Lex is already there and he snarks at her about trespassing on private property.  They compare notes on Adam's seemingly bizarre talents and about how Adam has them both worried about Lana; Lex tells her to lock the door when she's finished.

* The first reference to Woodward and Bernstein, arguably the most famous "real life" reporting duo.

Episode 3.13, Velocity

Chloe goes back to Lex a day or two later, telling him about the needle she saw Adam use and showing off the vial she found.  The lab she took it too say it had a tiny amount of blood platelets that weren't human nor animal; Lex is amused at her disregard for breaking into confidential medical records. Chloe also points out that Adam had a Dr. Lia Teng from Metropolis visit him twice a week, but she's not a general practitioner, she's a molecular biologist.  Lex asks her not to tell any of this new information to Lana.

A few days later she's working with Clark at the Torch on his article on Dante - a local street racer who has Pete over a barrel.  Chloe points out that Clark seems very invested, and while he tries to play it off as journalist enthusiasm, she questions if his source is Pete.   Clark relents that he's keeping a secret and is trying to protect Pete.  Chloe says that maybe Pete will listen to her instead because she's merely his friend (unlike Clark's sibling like bond with Pete); she also discovers that all the license plates Clark found are from stolen cars.   Clark decides to go to the sheriff.

Episode 3.14, Obsession

Clark and Chloe are at LuthorCorp on a school field trip listening to Lionel Luthor talk to the kids, both annoyed at being there; Clark says he'd help Chloe escape through the fire exit except the trip is counted towards their final grade.   Lionel, as he's leaving says he's glad they are both "looking to the future."   Chloe keeps snarking about Lionel and the teacher breaks up their "jaded little fan club."  Clark ends up in another elevator that inexplicable breaks with him and another student, Alicia Baker, inside.  Clark uses his powers to save them, as does Alicia, and Chloe rushes to Clark after the incident to make sure he's okay.

Clark goes to Chloe a few days later for help after Alicia has attacked her father and has been stalking after Clark.   He admits he should of told her soon but Chloe understands keeping her confidence, however "once she went psycho, all bets are off."  They hatch a plan to lure Alicia into a lead painted room; Chloe makes a sob-story confession to Alicia where Clark tries to trap Alicia in the room.

Episode 3.15, Resurrection

Chloe and Lex are tag-teaming Dr. Lia Teng; Chloe has discovered that Dr. Teng had a green card wedding most likely arranged by Lionel.  Teng and her husband work at the abandoned Metron Pharmaceuticals.  Lex admits his father refuses to sell the property and suggest Chloe back off a little before she gets in over her head yet again.

Clark joins Chloe at the Torch; he claims that working on a story will help keep his mind off of his dad in the hospital.  Chloe's contacted Metropolis General hospital and found out that Vince, a supposed organ transplant, never showed up; Clark concludes the helicopter that took the body out of Smallville must of instead taken Vince somewhere else.  Clark tracks it back to Metron where he listens to Teng and Lex talk.

Episode 3.16, Crisis

Chloe and Lana are studying when Clark ends up getting a phone call at the Teen Crisis Center from Lana in danger - from the future.  While the sheriff thinks it's a prank but Chloe, Lana, and Clark investigate it at the Torch.  Chloe cleans up the audio somewhat, noting storm in the background, Adam screaming that Lana lied to him, and Clark helps her pick out a game of the Vipers that hasn't been played

Later that day, Chloe's contacted her source at the phone company who traced a call to a woman who works at the hospital whom none of them know.   Clark points out that they have the advantage of knowing at least some of what is going to happen; he says they should get Lana out to the farm away from Adam.  Chloe follows to the farm waiting for Clark to try to find the cellphone but Clark misses Adam.  She decides to go to the Torch to see if she can hear anything on the police scanner; Jonathan lets her borrow the truck because he doesn't want her car getting stranded in the rain.  Meanwhile, Clark is waylaid after meeting up with Lex by Metropolis PD and later the FBI Lex makes a deal with.

Chloe makes it to the Torch where Adam is waiting for her; he has found out that Lana and Chloe left together.  He threatens her with a pair of scissors, demanding to know where Lana is; Chloe tries to get away from him, but Adam sees the truck and deduces that Lana it at Clark's house.   Adam ties Chloe up and forces her to be bait in the truck when they get to the farm; he uses this to lure Jonathan out, beat him up, beat Chloe up and then threaten Lana to come out.  Chloe tries to warn Jonathan but to no avail.

Martha finds Jonathan and Chloe in the rain, brings them in, and tends to their wounds.   Clark rushes back from Metropolis to see what's going on and find them there; Chloe tells him that Adam's already been to the Torch, the Talon, and here.   Clark decides to check the Teen Crisis Center to see if they can figure out more of what is going on.
